The galaxy is yours in LEGO® Star Wars™: The Skywalker Saga. The game immerses players in the expansive saga with the freedom to control hundreds of characters, ships and vehicles to create their own unique journey through the galaxy.
Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga is the latest Lego game from TT games, and the last one I worked on at my time there.
Being the largest game TT had ever made, we as a department had a much greater share of the game we were in charge of. As such, I was in charge of 2 of the 30 levels and large sections of multiple hubs. I've chosen to highlight my the 2 levels instead of all my work on the project.
Firstly, the Grevious Boss Fight went through a ton of iterations before we settled on what it is in the video. But essentially there were a few phases where you would fight Grevious, he'd run off, the player solves a micro puzzle, and you fight Grevious again. I had a lot of freedom to evolve this fight, and built in shortcuts and optional areas to bypass the puzzles and sneak up behind him. Which felt thematically appropriate and in line with the film. Obviously, given the significance of this scene in meme culture, it was a lot of fun to work on and there were references to them within the level at some point but have subsequently been removed.
Secondly, we have the Death Star Escape, which went through similar iterations. Given its such an iconic scene, I was honoured to have been given it and I really felt like I did it justice and it embodies the chaotic nature of Han and Chewie creating distractions, whilst Luke and Leia take an alternative path. The transitions between the 2 pairs allowed for a lot of fun foreshadowing which I'm pleased is largely intact. Sadly, I left before my vision could be fully realised as the functionality was not there at the time. My intention was to have an endless amount of Storm Troopers piling in, and the player needing to close doors to stop them, which I feel would have added greatly to the drama of the level.
Ultimately I found the project to be difficult to work on and I left before it was finished. This was down to a multitude of issues in truth. But I was surprised and proud of how little of my work had changed in the 2 and a half years since leaving TT. Namely a lot of my designs, Lego and animations were all still the same. And whilst I felt I had to leave, I'm still really happy with all the work I did there and really glad that I got to work on this title before I left.
I hope - after its strong sales and reviews - that it can revive TT games into making more titles of its calibre.
